Daily Rituals: Famous Writers vs Your Workflow

by bxrtley

I’m reading Mason Currey’s Daily Rituals: How Artists Work and noticing the deep work patterns Cal Newport often discusses. Writers like Hemingway, Auden and Fitzgerald work in two highly focused peaks, then stop. But what of the person with an intrusive day job? Here’s what novelist Bernard Malamud had to say:

There’s no one way—there’s too much drivel about this subject. You’re who you are, not Fitzgerald or Thomas Wolfe. You write by sitting down and writing…Eventually everyone learns his or her own best way. The real mystery to crack is you.

Just do the work.
