Honeymoons Are Necessary, But Overrated
I used to run cross-country in high school. The Honeymoon Phase of aligning my afterschool schedule with a senior crush was worth the charley horses. I got to run with a girl I liked. But something weird happened. I eventually started to run for myself. Pressfield’s book reminds me of cross-country. Especially when there’s no one cheering in the stands anymore because you’re running that stretch where spectators and cameras aren’t allowed. It’s too dangerous for them. There’s isn’t any room. Just you and the path. Honeymoons are necessary for starting, but unfit for sustainability. Keep running.
